  • Ayano is an extremely knowledgeable and experienced teacher. Coming from someone who taught biology at a university, she is able to very skillfully balance when to make you think/talk on your own and when to guide you. This is such a rare and invaluable trait in an educator. Although I was very nervous going in, I had a lot of fun talking about anime and games with her. If you are on the fence about trying out a lesson with Ayano-sensei, I highly suggest going for it. You will not regret it (especially if you like anime and gaming topics)!

  • A lot of people our age who grew up in Hawaii took some Japanese classes. My dentist said she took lessons from elementary school all the way to college level and was among the top test scoring students all the way up. But she never achieved fluency in Japanese and was never able to speak other than what was in the textbook. Ayano sensei is very different. She teaches real Japanese and you will not sound like a textbook. Her conversation lessons are realistic and she teaches the way Japanese people actually speak.   • Today we started the lesson talking about Japanese smartphone games! I got to learn a lot about common terms and shorthands used when talking about the topic. There's various words for "Greater Than", "Less Than", "More and More", "Little by Little", etc. and I wasn't sure which words could be used to describe which things!
